Materials –
Size 4 worsted weight yarn (75 yards of light brown; small amount of dark brown, white and black)
· 3.5 mm crochet hook
· 12mm safety eyes
· Black crochet/embroidery thread for smile (optional)
· Scissors
· Tapestry needle
· Stuffing
· Stitch markers

Abbreviations – US terminology
MC- Magic circle
SC- Single crochet
SC INC- Single crochet increase
INV DEC- Invisible decrease
St(s)- Stitch(es)

NOTES –
– Slowly stuff as you go, you want it to be firm but not stretched. You will be working in the round; I like to use a stitch marker at the beginning of each round.
– Finished sloth measure approximately 7 inches tall in its sitting position.

Eye Patch – Make 2
This piece is worked crocheting on both sides of the foundation chain to create an oval shape, you will want to keep your chain tight to help avoid the look of ‘holes’, we will be working in the round.
With dark brown chain 10
Round 1: SC in the 2nd chain from hook, SC in the next 7 chains, 3SC in the last chain; working down the other side of the foundation chain (see picture to the right), SC in the next 7 chains, complete 2SC in the last chain (which is also the first chain we started with) (20)
Round 2: 2SC in the first st, SC in the next 7, 2SC in each of the next 3 sts, SC in the next 7, 2 SC in each of the last 2 sts (26)
Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing. Insert your safety eye in round one by an edge and set aside; do not secure the backs just yet.

Head –
With white
Round 1: Create a magic circle with 6 S
Round 2: SC INC in each st (12)
Round 3: SC in the first st, SC INC in the next, rep around (18)
Round 4: SC in the first 2 sts, SC INC in the next, rep around (24)
Round 5: SC in the first 3 sts, SC INC in the next, rep around (30)
Round 6: SC in the first 4 sts, SC INC in the next, rep around (36)
Round 7: SC in the first 5 sts, SC INC in the next, rep around (42)
Change to light brown
Round 8: SC in the first 6 sts, SC INC in the next, rep around (48)
Round 9: SC in the first 7 sts, SC INC in the next, rep around (54)
Rounds 10-16: SC around

NOTE – Here is where we will attach the facial features. Place the safety eyes (inside of your eye patches) in between rounds 5 and 6 on each side. Next, angle your eye patches to your liking. I angled mine down and to the side on each side. Once you find the angle you like sew your eye patch into place and secure your safety eyes.
Nose – With black yarn and your tapestry needle make a pass through 3 rounds between your eyes. Continue to pass through to create your desired thickness.
Smile – (Optional) With your black embroidery thread (or yarn) create a smile below the nose by making a ‘v’. I added my smile after closing the head but adding it at this stage can make this step easier.

Round 17: SC in the first 7 sts, INV DEC in the next, rep around (48)
Round 18: SC in the first 6 sts, INV DEC in the next, rep around (42)
Round 19: SC in the first 5 sts, INV DEC in the next, rep around (36
Round 20: SC in the first 4 sts, INV DEC in the next, rep around (30)
Round 21: SC in the first 3 sts, INV DEC in the next, rep around (24)
*Continue to stuff firmly*
Round 22: SC in the first 2 sts, INV DEC in the next, rep around (18)
Round 23: SC in the first st, INV DEC in the next, rep around (12)
Round 24: INV DEC around (6)
Fasten off and sew remaining hole closed, weave in your end.

Legs-
Make 2 stuffing lightly at the bottom
With white
Round 1: Create a magic circle with 6 SC
Round 2: SC INC in each stitch around (12)
Round 3: SC in the first st, SC INC in the next, rep around (18)
Round 4: SC in the first 2 sts, SC INC in the next, rep around (24)
Rounds 5-6: SC around (24)
Round 7: SC in the first 2 sts, INV DEC in the next, rep around (18)
Change to light brown
Rounds 8-19: SC around (18)
Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.

Assembly –
– Sew the head onto the body making sure to add extra stuffing as you go. This will help add strength to avoid a wobbly head.
– Next, sew the legs onto the body starting at the 9th round from the bottom and ending at the 17th round.
– Lastly, sew the arms onto the body with a slight angle down (this will help the arms to rest onto the legs when sitting). I sewed my arms starting at round 20 and ending at round 25 when counting from the bottom.

Materials:
-Worsted weight (4 ply) yarn in light brown and cream
-Size E (3.50mm) crochet hook
-7.5mm black safety eyes
-Fiberfill (or your stuffing of choice)
-A small amount of dark brown felt for the eyes & some matching sewing thread
-Scissors
-Stitch marker
-Tapestry/yarn needle

Head (starting with cream yarn)
R1: Ch 7, starting in 2nd ch from hook, sc 6, turn and sc 6 in the front loops of the chain (12 sts)
This is called a foundation chain and is a great way to start a piece that you want to be more oval than round. After crocheting through the top loops of the chain (pics. 1 & 2), you turn your work around and crochet in the bottom loops of the chain (pics. 3 & 4). The first round is complete! Now you just continue as you normally would.
R2: Inc 1, sc 4, inc 2, sc 4, inc 1 (16 sts)
R3: *Sc 1, inc 1 sc 5, inc 1* rep 2 times (20 sts)
Switch to brown yarn
R4: Sc 1, inc 1 sc 1, inc 5, sc 1, inc 1, sc 1, inc 1, sc 7, inc 1 (29 sts)
Increasing 5 in a row at the top of the head gives him a cute sloping forehead.
R5-7: Sc in all 29 sts (3 rounds total—29 sts)
R8: Sc 1, dec 1, sc 1, dec 5, sc 1, dec 1, sc 1, dec 1, sc 7, dec 1 (20 sts)
R9: Sc in all 20 sts (20 sts)

Cut out two small oval pieces of felt, each about 3/4 inch (4.5 cm) long. Cut small slits in each of the ovals and insert the safety eyes (make sure the slits you make aren’t exactly in the middle, but towards the top of the pieces). But do NOT put the safety backings on yet until the eyes are properly positioned on the face and the felt pieces are sewn into place.

Insert his right eye (your left when facing him) between R 2 & 3, where the arrow is pointing. Insert his left eye (your right when facing you) between R 1 & 2 where the other arrow is pointing.
As you see, you should have about 4 1/2 sts between the felt pieces. The face is what makes the sloth cute, so make sure you take your time to get it just right.

Now we’ll embroider the little nose on, right between the eyes in the middle of the foundation chain. The nose is about 1 1/2 sts wide. Embroider 3-4 sts across using black embroidery floss. Do not attach the safety eye backings until the felt pieces are sewed on.

Using the sewing thread and your needle, neatly sew the felt pieces to the head. You will always need more sewing thread than you think, so start with a long piece. Felt pieces should be at a slight angle, with the bottoms pointing away from each other. Now attach the safety backings.

And there you go! The hardest part is over! Now continue crocheting.
R10: *Sc 2, dec 1* rep 5 times (15 sts)
Stop and start stuffing, continuing as you work.
R11: *Sc 1, dec 1* (10 sts)
R13: *Dec 1* (5 sts)
Finish off. Finish stuffing firmly and sew up hole neatly, since this part will be visible.
Body (using brown yarn)
R1: Ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook
R2: *Inc 1* rep 6 times (12 sts)
R3-6: Sc in all 12 sts (4 rounds total-12 sts)
Finish off leaving long tail for sewing. Stuff firmly and sew to head. The body will be positioned the same way for the long-armed sloth as for the short-armed sloth. Refer to the picture at the beginning to get the body positioned just right.

Arms (for SHORT-armed sloth)
Using brown yarn. Start with a long tail for sewing later.
Ch 4, starting in 2nd ch from hook, sl st 3
Finish off leaving tail for sewing.

Sew arms onto the sides of the body right up against the neck. When there’s more than one yarn tail on any given piece, usually when you’re working in rows, I like to weave both ends into the body or head. That way there aren’t any ends popping out or fraying like they do when you just cut them.

Legs (for SHORT-armed sloth)
Using brown yarn. Start with a long tail for sewing later.
Ch 3, starting in 2nd ch from hook, sl st 2
Finish off leaving tail for sewing.
Sew the legs onto R 3 & 4 of the body. Weave in all ends.

Arms (for LONG-armed sloth)
Using brown yarn. Start with a long tail for sewing later.
Ch 9, starting in 2nd ch from hook, sl st 8
Finish off leaving tail for sewing.
Sew onto the center of the body, under neck. See the picture below to see how to sew his back arm on. Weave in all ends.

Legs (for LONG-armed sloth)
Using brown yarn. Start with a long tail for sewing later.
Ch 7, starting in 2nd ch from hook, sl st 6
Finish off leaving tail for sewing.

Sew the legs onto R 2 & 3 of body. See the picture above this one to see how to position his front leg. Weave in all ends.
To attach Zippy to different things, just take some extra yarn and sew the arms together. Do the same for the legs. Just imagine how cute this little guy would look hanging from all sorts of things!

EMBROIDER & ATTACH FACE & EYES

1. Using only 4 strands, cut a 10-inch piece of embroidery floss. Thread your embroidery needle and double knot end. Starting with the nose, make 3 horizontal stitches at center about 1 stitch wide. Make each stitch close to the previous one so they look connected. Embroider a long horizontal stitch on the rnd below nose for mouth. Secure thread on the back of your piece and cut.
2. Rethread your embroidery needle and double knot end. To embroider the eye, start at the inner corner and make 4 back stitches in a soft U shape. Secure thread on the back of your piece and cut. Repeat step 3 for 2nd eye.
3. Using a sewing pin, pin face at the center of body over rnds 8-13.
4. Thread tapestry needle with yarn tail and attach face to body, first going under a st of the body.
5. Insert needle into next st on face from back to front
6. Insert needle back into the same hole you previously came out of on body and up through next one following around the face until it’s fully attached. Weave in end.
7.
